BGR is reporting that Apple will offer the iPhone 4 in Mexico and carrier unlocked. The estimated price is believe to be $1,500 pesos above the price of the iPhone 3GS, which is currently going for $9,510.84 pesos ($730 US). Anyone want to head to Tijuana and pick one of these bad boys up? Probably most of Southern California.
The first skinned device to receive Android 2.2 looks to be the HTC EVO. After some rumors went back and forth around the web today, Sprint and HTC decided to put and end to all the ruckus and put out an official press release. Android 2.2 is coming to the EVO 4G on August 3rd and will be supposed to be up for customer initiation a couple days before. So what is Froyo you ask? Well check out the list of new features after the break…
We have already learned so much about the upcoming Droid 2. We saw some leaked specs which show it using the same OMAP 3600 series processor as the Droid X, 5MP Camera (which hopefully is 8MP by launch), and a new and improved slide out keyboard. The fun doesn’t stop there. A leaked user guide shows that the Motorola Droid 2 will have the same Motoblur style interface you find on the Droid X and it will be runnin Froyo at launch. The good news is that it will have Android 2.2 and that it seems like the launch is getting close. The bad news is that it looks like there won’t be any more stock Android devices for sale anymore. The last three(G1, Droid 1, and Nexus One) are either no longer for sale or will probably be updated to this new Motoblur. I don’t hate it, but some do. Now if we could just get the Droid 2 and X on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile then life would be good.
For a long time the Kindle has been this device sort of in limbo. It is lacking too many features to compete with Apple’s iPad, but it was also too expensive for most to begin replacing their book collection. All that might have just changed. Shortly after Amazon reduced the price of their existing Kindle to $189.99 down form $259.99, Amazon announced their brand new Kindle. As far as features go you are looking at the same product. However there is a lot to love about this new Kindle. For a run down of the new click on after the break…
Well would you look at that. Just days after I win a Galaxy S in Samsung’s Twitter give-aways, a video walk through of the Galaxy S running Froyo hits the tubes. The phone still runs Samsung’s not so Touch Wiz, Touch Wiz interface, which personally I find kind of nice. It will include the JIT compiler for that enhanced CPU speed. It will also have Froyo’s new memory management, tethering (depending on carrier), Froyo widgets such as tips, market, and the updated YouTube widget, and a few new goodies unique to Samsung. One of these fine goodies is the rotation lock supplied in the top of the notification tray. You can force the phone to stay in portrait if you like. From the video it also looks like it comes pre-loaded with a new task manager. The man in the video doesn’t explain if this is something he already had or if it came with the Froyo update, but it looks nice whatever the case. Oh and Flash 10.1 is not working just yet, but should be in time for the official release. If you are interested in how it runs and looks, check out the video after the break…
Google has been working on a secure system to protect developers from having their applications pirated. Google has made the first anti-piracy effort today by providing devs a “set of code libraries.” These libraries in turn will assist the dev with the ability to send a message to the Android Market, thus allowing the request of an apps license status. Android Market checks through it’s database (server-based authentication) to see if the user actually bought the app and then sends the dev a message providing the details. The “set of code libraries” is available for free to all devs and works on Android 1.5 or higher. Read more of this post
We knew it was coming but now it’s official. Rogers Wireless has launched ‘chatr’, the low cost, entry level wireless carrier in Canada. Chatr’s coverage will initially begin with Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa, with other cities to follow soon. The plans are simple as are the phones in which chatr will launch. The plans include a $45 monthly plan for unlimited talk-and-text, followed up with a $35 for unlimited talk and 50 texts messages.
The handsets are full costs (ala MetroPCS) and come in four flavors: Nokia 1661 for $60, LG GB125R flip for $75, Nokia 2680 portrait slider for $95 and the one of the most popular phones among all carriers for the entry level consumer, the Samsung Gravity with landscape QWERTY slider keyboard. Long distance is not include and has a seperate feature on their site with U.S. and Canada both coming in at 15 cents a minute, with the first 50 text messages free on the $34 Unlimited plan, and 15 cents per minute with text messaging included on the $45 Unlimited Talk and Text plan.
Sprint, the third largest carrier in the U.S. reported it had lost fewer valuable contract customers in the second quarter than Wall Street expected. Sprint list 228,000 in the monthly bill paying subscribers, which is a big decrease from the expected 335,000 from Analyst predictions.
The quarterly losses rose to $760 million, or 25 cents per share, up from $384 million, or 13 cents a share the previous year – this also included a charge of 10 cents per share for deferred tax assets. Sprint shares have risen 17 percent overall since early July and were up 2.4 percent as of today.
Sprint’s move-ahead with Android, particularly the HTC EVO 4G, touting the 4G WiMax network, provided much of the help in retaining and gaining new subscribers. In addition, Sprint focus on customer service has done a 180 from not long ago. The everything plans have really assisted Sprint in retaining subscribers while other carriers begin to charge for data or have removed unlimited data altogether. Most notably is the everything plans Sprint offers, which is the only one in the industry which allows consumers to have unlimited calling to any mobile network with unlimited data and text messaging. Churn rates have decreased and it appears that Sprint is headed in the right direction.
A tweet toady my Mark Moons, the Regional Director Benelux at HTC Netherlands, fired off a tweet about Android Froyo 2.2. In no uncertain terms, HTC confirmed that an update is possible starting tomorrow but that nothing is final and that some testing needs to be completed before the roll out can begin.

Many (including) Tweakers look forward to 2.2 with a focus on a specific feature …. but a major is not listed! rara …
I guess all we have to do right now is wait and see? Is this news getting all the Desire owners hearts pumping?
RIM is coming back strong, they have sent invites for a big mystery event and look at that AT&T will be there too. The event will take place in New York City and will start 11AM sharp. Is it time for the Blackberry Slider 9800 to be shown off officially? Will we get information on the rollout of Blackberry OS 6? I am pretty excited for RIM to come back strong, seeing as they have been quiet all summer.
