A story in International Business Times states that China Unicom has closed on a deal as the exclusive distributor in China for the iPhone. China Unicom begins selling the phone in September. As written in an earlier story, Apple’s has been one of the most profitable handset manufactures despite the fact the iPhone has been on sale since 2007.
Estimated put Apple’s profit from each sale to China Uicom of about 1,100 yuan (US$161). This makes Mr. Jobs pretty darn happy realizing a profit of approximately $805,000,000, which is not a bad deal.
Smugglers of iPhones have been selling the device in China already for quite some time. Prices vary from 400 yuan ($59) for 16GB to 1000 yuan ($146) for 32GB, which is much lower than the average price of 2000 yuan ($293) for 16GB to 3000 yuan ($439) 32 GB of legal ones.
The value of shares traded in China on July 29 surpassed the combined amount in the U.S., U.K. and Japan for the first time on record. China’s economy has slowed but has quite followed the United States and Europe into a recession. China Unicom estimates a windfall of profits at about 40 percent with the addition of the iPhone. Question is, are people going to pay for the legal version or save their money and get the smuggled version.
