This weekend was chocked full of Verizon and Motorola news. Earlier this month, Verizon and Google had a joint news conference debuting the new Motorola Droid and announcing a partnership to leverage high-speed network and open Android platform for wireless innovation. Both Engadget and Boy Genius have reported about the upcoming Motorola Droid (which was formally known as the Sholes codename). And yesterday, Motorola released it’s first commercial of the Droid taking direct aim at Apple iPhone. What I have to share with you is bigger than any cell phone story all year.
My sources have confirmed that Verizon’s CEO, Mr. Lowell McAdam, has flown into San Jose to visit Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California for the last several months. The meetings have taken place approximately every two weeks and the reason for the visits was to make sure the production of the new Motorola handset was moving along smoothly. Something certainly expected for a phone with a game changing platform and design taking advantage of Verizon huge 3G coverage. This is all pretty exciting information but not the biggest news this weekend for Verizon.
There is more to Motorola and Verizon anti-iPhone Campaign than meets the eye. While everyone was busy talking about or writing about the Verizon anti-iPhone campaing, few noticed that the commercials were not produced by Verizon, but Motorola.
In a news report by Reuters over the weekend titled “Apple’s on a roll – iPhone sales pivotal” the story states, “In September, Apple reported sales of more than 30 million iPhones to date, which some analysts say translated into about 3.5 million so far for the quarter, meaning the company would have to pick up the pace to best the total from a year ago.”
What do iPhone sales have to do with Verizon you ask? Well apparently, Mr. Lowell McAdam wasn’t just visiting Google on those trips to Mountain View, California. Apple headquarters is only 8.5 miles away from Google’s HQ.
We all know that Verizon started testing their 4G network earlier this year and that Verizon plans to roll out their LTE network on the 700 MHz spectrum sometime next year.
My sources have confirmed that Apple and Verizon have been testing a CDMA iPhone on Verizon’s 4G LTE network. Yes, you read that correctly, Verizon and Apple have been testing the first 4G phone on Verizon’s 4G network. The tests have been taking place for the last couple of months but with no confirmation on the release date. If you read the article by Reuters above, it would make good fiscal sense for Apple (and Verizon) to release the first CDMA iPhone right here in the United States running on Verizon’s new 4G network, with announcement expected in 2010 at Apple’s WWDC.
Now here’s your coffee talk for Sunday: Verizon + iPhone + 4G LTE network. Go ahead, you know you want to have to scream.
Happy Sunday and thanks for waiting for this story.

October 19, 2009 at 7:23 am |
SteveJ you have no idea what you are talking about. All Verizon LTE devices will be CDMA as well for at least 10 years.
October 19, 2009 at 6:21 am |
I second what SteveJ said.
October 19, 2009 at 6:48 am |
CDMA is dead. Verizon is going LTE (GSM based) and Sprint is going WiMAX.
Do you really think Apple would let Verizon run ads ripping on the iPhone with the “There’s a map for that” and the new Droid ads, even if they’re made by Motorola, they still have “Verizon” plastered all over them.
Also, just because they are testing it doesn’t mean it is going to happen. Apple plays their partners off one another all the time.
Result? Bunk. Not saying this won’t happen, just saying there’s nothing in this post that leads me to believe it will.
October 19, 2009 at 11:07 am |
Both Verizon and AT&T will be running LTE, so it makes sense for Apple to produce an LTE handset.

To my best knowledge the only dual-stack (CDMA/LTE) solutions available are from LG and Nokia.
Also LTE is not “GSM based” … LTE is just standarized by 3GPP.

You say that no one noticed that the TV ads are from Motorola instead of Verizon. What makes you claim that they ARE Motorola ads? I don’t see any indication one way or the other on the version embedded here. So what’s your evidence that Motorola produced and ran the ads instead of Verizon? That’s a very key piece of information that you’re not covering.
October 19, 2009 at 11:34 am |
Indeed, the new ads call out a “droiddoes.com” website which is very clearly hosted by Verizon Wireless (URL redirects rather obviously.)
October 19, 2009 at 8:40 am |
This is the stupidest thing I’ve read in awhile.

Seriously?

Your information is simply flawed and incorrect. This is a Verizon ad. How do I know? Go to the droiddoes.com website and you will see that droiddoes.com is hosted on the verizonwireless.com website!
That glaring error makes the rest of your post extremely questionable.
October 19, 2009 at 9:53 am |
This post is totally debunked:
http://droiddoes.com is a Verizon website, not a Motorola site. And it’s playing the ad…
Good bye. I’m adding this blog to my list of spam blogs.

I have put an email into my contact with Motorola to confirm, once again that the ad was produced (or co-produced) by Motorola.

Sure, it’s news. Bigger news? Not even close… maybe to die-hard Apple loyalists it is.
Apple’s policies are awful.
The fact that an Android based phone (Droid) has finally come out that blows the iPhone away is far more important news to a marketplace (consumers and developers alike) that’ eager to use a more open, less restrictive platform.

As an advertising manager in the technology field, I can tell you there is one thing you don’t do. You don’t spend millions of dollars on slamming a company that you are working with behind closed doors. Verizon is spending millions of dollars on their Droid campaign – factor in media buys/TV commercials during NFL and MBL games and you quickly reach multi-millions of dollars. They are pitting Verizon against Apple because they know that Apple is the brand they need to beat…not AT&T…who’s brand has already taken a beating. The Google/Verizon alliance and the fact that Verizon has stated “none of their phones will come with app portals other than Verizon App Store pre loaded on the phone” should put these ridiculous rumors to rest once and for all. Users can side load those other app stores – WinMo, Android, & eventually Palm – but most non-technical people will not or will not even have knowledge they exist. They will simply use Verizon App Store as their purchase point. Apple would never agree to take their App Store off the iPhone. The App Store is the reason the iPhone was made!! It is a delivery device for the App Store!

Is it me or is it weird to say what if at the last apple refresh in san francisco a few months back, what if the rumor where true to Lowell Mcadam, maybe some other high level exce’s from Verizon like the C.F.O. where present. would this seem so strange?

Android yes but for how much? I left Verizon for WOW Mobile. I was paying $179.00 per month because I needed unlimited Internet. WOW Mobile a new online store offers Android 1.6 on the MyTouch for only $79.95. It’s mobile voip and no data transfer cap! Checkout http://www.joinwowmobile.net it’s awesome IMHO!

Alot of bloggers are not really pleased with the new iPad.There was 2 much hoopla over it and alot blogers got disapointed.Thing is, I for one see great deal of the awesome potential uses of the device. Third-party apps for making tunes, games, newsprints and magazines and FFS books, all kinds of neat stuff, but they failed to sell it properly (excluding the books). It smells kinda unfinished
