The video about the battery life of the Droid has some major quality deficiencies: First of all, use some better camera setup – this hand-held-not-in-focus-wobbly-view is just unprofessional and quite distracting. Then, how many minutes/hours of battery life did you save? And obviously not using apps will make the phone run longer, but this isn’t worth a video – the title is just a misnomer. You just recommend two apps, and for that, the review of them is too short. Sorry, but I’m sick of unprofessional and unscientific wanna-be tipps and tricks.

Why make millions of people find and run a special app that tricks the phone into doing multi-touch????

Why can’t it “just work” like my $99 iPhone does????

    • ER says:

Because Linda, do you think Apple would want other companies to cash in on their “technology”. Apple doesn’t want anyone else in on their good idea.

  5. Linda says:

Droid: USA Today app quickly kills your battery constantly looking for new stories…. and must be running ALL THE TIME… even when there aren’t any new stories.

iPhone: I *EXIT* the USA Today app… it uses *NO* battery life… but it still alerts me when there a new stories found. (A sound, a pop-up, or a badge counter…. happens.) Clicking on the pop-up will run the non-running app… and let me read the store. No need to ever keep the app running. No need to check the app. No need to search for the app.

Gee… I wonder which method is better.

Why is the default “small poor youtube videos”?????

And I have to hit all these buttons… and make all these choices… just to get a decent video.

… and I notice your “HQ video” never did load at all… or display anything… and you abruptly ended your “demo”.

    • ER says:

You shouldn’t have bought a smart phone if you’re not smart enough to hit all those buttons. The Droid plays HQ videos by default if you’re connected on wifi. Otherwise it uses normal quality so that you can stream your video instead of waiting to load an HQ video over the network.

    Several things worth mentioning:

    1) Video/cam quality not withstanding; the power usage tip is fairly useful even for non-techies. The advanced app killer is nice if you download and try a lot of apps (first time and power users will run into this). Otherwise, the best power saving techniques for the Droid is to turn off Bluetooth, Wifi, and GPS when not in use. Wifi especially uses a lot of power. There is a very useful (and builtin) widget called “power control” that will but one touch control of these directly on the home screen.

In all seriousness, the battery will most likely become less of an issue after two weeks when you have fully explored it.

    2) The USA Today app is poorly written. Android’s multitasking ability is not really the problem so much as their app is constantly downloading.

    3) The “pinch zoom” gesture would be very nice BUT Apple currently holds the patent. Motorola and Google could make it a part of the software but at the cost of a huge lawsuit.

    4) The lower quality YouTube videos is probably a bandwidth issue on Verizon’s side as the HD clips require more network throughput.

  8. Jimbo says:

PhoneMyPC has supported multi-touch since the release of the G1 last year. Its most amazing on the Droid.

  9. Damien says:

The USA App on the iphone does use battery power to notify you. It just does not check constantly.

  10. And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.
