What the new iPad does ‘NOT’ include
January 27, 2010 23 Comments
So there is a lot of positive buzz as well as plenty of negative. One of the most exciting things leading up to today’s launch was the idea that we would see a front facing camera so we can do video chat over Skype. Seems like the iPad would be the perfect device just for that. Well Apple doesn’t seem to think so. There are a few other things Apple deemed unnecessary. So if you already have an iPhone and feel your just inches from getting all the functionality you would need to replace your laptop, or if you thought the iPad was finally going to be that device that replaces your laptop. You might want to think again. Here is what Apple decided not to include in its new iPad.
Adobe Flash: Of course this is a love/hate relationship. Whether you like Flash or not, we use Flash to consume content every day and it is a pretty big feature to leave out of a device that is supposed to replace your netbook.
Camera front or rear facing: Netbooks have this, laptops have this, hell even the iPhone has a camera. Apple didn’t take note from the folks who lashed out at the lack of camera on the iPod Touch in September. No video chat this time around.
USB connectivity other than app specific or iTunes: Your USB features are equal to that of the iPhone. You cannot connect any 3rd party devices to your iPad that are not made by Apple or a developer who produced it for a specific app purpose. You can’t plug your cameras, phones, or MP3 players in to your iPad.
Multitasking: There were so many rumors that lead up to today and one of the biggest was multitasking for iPhone 4.0. Not only did we not see iPhone 4.0, but we didn’t see multitasking on the iPhone or iPad. The iPad essentially runs iPhone OS and can run only 1 app at a time. Yes, you can listen to music you have from the iPad music app while doing other things, but you aren’t getting Pandora, multiple twitter apps, or any other 3rd party app open at the same time as another. There was a spec bump up from the iPhone. We now have the Apple 1Ghz A4 processor which can still only do what the iPhone chip can do because of Apple’s limitations. This may change when we do finally see iPhone OS 4.0, but it hasn’t happened yet and we aren’t seeing any signs that it will.
Storage space: You have a few options for storage when it comes to the iPad. There is a 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. The 64GB WiFi only model starts at $799.99. Will this replace the 250GB hard drives in your laptop? Will this even replace the 120-160GB hard drives that come in $200.00 netbooks? NO! For being a device that allows you to aggregate content like movies, photos, music, and books, there sure is a lack of space to do so.
SD card reader/slot: No expandable memory. Also not popping in your memory cards from your DSLR’s or point and shoots to see the photos you have taken right there on your iPad.
HD Conent: The screen is very dense with pixels weighing in at 1024×768. However the aspect ratio is 4:3 (unlike the ZuneHD’s 16:9) essentially forcing you to only watch iTunes HD content. If you have a Bluray movie or any other HD video you want to play on the iPad, good luck getting it on the iPad. If you do manage to get the content on your iPad it might not look as beautiful as you would hope.
So you can take all the positives and all the negatives and then decide if this device is the end all be all that everyone expected Apple to bring. We are curious, will this replace your laptop or netbook?

I suppose more memory and multi-tasking will come with next version (need something to sell next year right?).
Really can’t believe something this size will not multi-task. That’s the biggest letdown for me.
There is so much information here! I’m trying to remember all of it so I can put it to work.

Very good information. Waiting for your next post.
I am about to get an iphone for me and my partner. He lives in Canada, i live in Berlin. Being able to use Skype on the iphone would spare us thous of dollars each yr. Since we’re both very busy and the time deviation between us is six to 8 hours, we just can’t always be on the computer at the corresponding time and use skype on our notebooks. Being able to move anywhere and establish free calls sounds wonderful. But is 3g fast enough to make skype calls via IM or do i want to be linked to a wireless net? We possess 3g download flatrate plans in Germany, so that issue wouldnt trouble me.
Thanks for sharing this. I’m a huge apple fan and support them for their decision to release the iPad. Thank you.
Sweet!
Nice! Awesome!
I don’t think the Ipad will be as successfull as the iphone, as it is not as knew and revolutionary.
