The Pharos 565 – For the construction worker in you

565

We’ve all done it.  You reach in your pocket, looking for that last nickel to pay the ancient taco truck chef, pull out your hand violently at the realization that your search was in vain only to send your brand new Nexus One crashing to the concrete!  You shriek, but it’s far too late, and you’re ar to clumsy; your phone has become Newton’s apple – history (Also a gravity pun!).  My friend, you are in luck!  No longer will you have to decide between rent and this month’s replacement phone, as the Pharos 565 is here!  Built to last, the 565 is as rugged as smartphones come, and it sports some respectable specifications to boot.  Under the hood, it’s equipped with a Marvell processor running at 624MHz, an average 256MB of RAM, 512MB of flash memory for storage, and a 3.5″ screen.  Unfortunately, it ships with the substantially outdated Windows Mobile 6.5, with no word of Windows ‘Phone’ 7 support.

Asus to release Android-based Apple iPad killer?

Sounds like it. Thinq.co.uk is reporting that their sources have uncovered information about the Asus’ “killer product” slated to drop this coming June.  Thinq’s source revealed that not only will Asus’ “killer product” be a tablet, but a tablet built with Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chipset and Google’s Android OS.  At an approximated price point of $500 US, and the theoretical real world Tegra 2 performance, this is sure to be a product to keep an eye on.

Nvidia’s Tegra 2 technology is based on a 1GHz dual-core version of ARM’s Cortex A9 processor, and also features a 3D graphics processor and hardware HD video decoder.

Nokia N97 rocking Windows Mobile 7 – Say What?

I love hackers. Best guys on the planet. Able to do stuff to warez and hardware that lone, mortal humans can’t fathom. Now some industrious hackers have decided to load up a Nokia N97 rocking Windows Mobile 7!

The phone only starts up but shows the Intel Atom processor running at 1100 MHz. Too bad it doesn’t show the main menu actually running all the way through.

UPDATE: it appears that the video is not of Windows Mobile 7 but Windows 7.

Android 2.1 + DROID = Eventually; Motorola backpedals

Yep.  InformationWeek (among others) has posted an article stating that someone over on Motorola’s Facebook staff jumped the gun and reported in err that Motorola’s DROID smartphone device would be getting Google’s highly praised Android 2.1 update this week over the air. The original Facebook post had this to say:

Hi all– we know you are frustrated with the lack of details regarding Android software upgrades and we sincerely apologize for not being able to share info sooner. We’re happy to relay the 2.1 upgrade to DROID will start to roll out this week, and we will have more information to share on other device upgrades later this week as well. Thanks for your patience and continued support.

Mobile device blogs began reporting on this immediately, and DROID owners everywhere (myself included) rejoiced at the information!  All that Google-ly goodness would soon be at our fingertips!  But, alas, the waiting must continue.  In an e-mail, Motorola spokesperson Juli Burda told Information Week,

The Droid over-the-air software upgrade is expected to rollout soon. It will automatically be pushed to phones when ready and Verizon Wireless customers will only have to accept the free download for continued use and enjoyment of this feature packed device.

Sorry ladies and gentlemen, looks like you’ll have to stick with 2.0.1 for a while longer.

AT&T Palm Pre to launch in May of 2010?

Precentral’s forum member Tony Cipriani released some information regarding the GSM Pre that is expected to come to AT&T. AT&T said at CES that 2 WebOS devices are meant to hit AT&T by the first half of 2010. According to an FCC filing found by said forum member, the Palm Pre should arrive on AT&T in May this year. We don’t know for sure if this means the Palm Pre Plus, the original Palm Pre, or possibly the rumored Pre 2, but we do know WebOS is coming to AT&T at some point. Right now AT&T’s flagship device is the iPhone and has been for years. There has not been any Android or WebOS devices to compete directly with the iPhone on one carrier. With 5 Android devices and 2 WebOS devices supposedly coming to AT&T by the first half of 2010, Apple will finally have some direct competition. That is of course until the 4th generation iPhone debuts.

HTC Legend shows its face on KPN’s site along side the N900 and X10

KPN’s site now has the HTC Legend put up on its site right next to the Nokia N900 and the Sony Ericsson X10. Making the Netherlands look like a a very smart phone in-touch country.  The Legend doesn’t have an exact release date just yet, but the whispers seem to be March based.  The Legend is looking like it will be the successor to the Hero. A very similar form factor to the  European based Hero, Sense UI, and Android 2.1 If it gets the new multi-touch Hero UI we just saw earlier, then this is something definitely worth getting excited about.

Skyfire bringing it’s Flash-y goodness to Android?

Skyfire is a widely known browser for its work on feature phones and Windows Mobile phones. Well Skyfire announced today, its acquisition of Kolbysoft. Kolbysoft develops the Steel mobile browser for Andriod devices. We can only assume that the acquisition is talent based to help Skyfire gain more ground via the Android platform. Skyfire usually provides full Flash support in a browser to allow for a more robust web experience. Flash + Multi-touch on the Nexus One or Motorola Droid? Count me in!
