Nokia N9 gets photographed, looks like a Macbook Air Nano

It seems these days there are more Nokia leaks than actual launches. Yesterday we saw the C7 leak, today we are seeing some pictures of the new Nokia N9. This is another home run in the hardware department for Nokia. It looks like some sort of Macbook/Macbook Air look-alike with a similar black chiclet keyboard. The phone looks like it might be kind of large, but that keyboard looks just amazing to type on. The light color with dark black keys looks pretty amazing on a phone. Now if only Nokia could make Symbian, Meego, or Maemo compelling for developers and users alike, I think we would be somewhere. Check out a few more photos after the break…

Bloomberg says the is iPhone coming to Verizon in January

Another day another Verizon rumor, but this one seems pretty credible. Bloomberg says that it has confirmed with 2 sources who are working on the project, that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon in January 2011. Bloomberg goes on to say that the iPhone exclusivity will end at the same time that the iPhone goes on sale on Verizon. So is this something AT&T has to be worried about? Adobe Shows Off Flash Mobile Prowess In New Video

Adobe released a new video demonstrating Flash 10.1 on smartphones like the Motorola Droid, Nexus One, Palm Pre in addition to a couple of netbooks and tablets (but not the iPad, of course). The the advent of HTML5 has been hot on the heals of Adobe’s flash, but it is still a tiny percentage of video when compared to Adobe’s Flash. Now Adobe wants to let the mobile technology market know that Flash is still very relevant, even though Apple decision to nix on the iPad. My question is this: Why is it taking so long to get flash pushed to mobile devices like Android, webOS, etc., when handsets like Nokia’s N900 plays YouTube videos right in the browser? Adobe needs to get Flash on mobile devices before this summer’s tsunami of phones hits.

GetJar Study: Mobile Apps To Grow $17 Billion by 2012

I had an opportunity to sit down with Bill Scott, V.P. Sales & Business Development of GetJar.com at last years Mobilize event in San Francisco to discuss mobile apps. Today,  GetJar, the premiere independent mobile app store with more than 60,000 mobile apps on hand for major mobile platforms: Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile, put out a study that predicts a gold rush in the number of mobile apps and the increase in size of the mobile app marketplace.

According to the study, performed by Chetan Sharma Consulting, mobile app downloads should jump from 7 billion in 2009 to almost 50 billion in 2012. The market is estimated to be worth approximately 17 billion dollars. GetJar CEO Ilja Laurs makes another statement, echoing the one from a Google executive. “It is easy to see how mobile apps will eclipse the traditional desktop Internet. It makes perfect sense that mobile devices will kill the desktop,” he said. Mr. Laurs backs up this claim with more data from the study, citing that 17% of GetJar users spend more time on internet-linked smartphones than they do on desktops.

Symbian & Nokia Lead Smartphone Market; RIM-Apple-Android Not Far Behind

Although Symbian holds the lead at 47%, both RIM and Apple are making serious inroads in the worldwide smartphone market share. According the latest figures produced by Gartner, an information technology research firm, both Symbian and Nokia were still in a solid first place of the world’s smartphone market, both RIM and Apple are becoming a serious threat to each. Nokia C6 Touchscreen Gets OK from FCC

Nokia’s forthcoming touchscreen phone known as the C6-00 has made its way to Nokia’s declaration of conformity site. The model known as the RM-612 is the C6-00 or C6, comes packed with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, quad-band GSM connectivity 900 – 1800, and tri-band WCDMA connectivity 900, 1900, 2100 MHz. Unfortunately, it appears that this will not hit the  U.S.A. shores anytime soon as it has no American 3G bands. It would be interesting to see this phone rocking Maemo, but we suspect that this may be a Symbian device.

Major carriers band together to from own Wholesale Applications Community

The world’s largest mobile phone carriers say they’re joining forces to make it easier for software developers to write apps that will run on as many phones as possible. The Wholesale Applications Community announced Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is an attempt to retake the initiative from phone makers like Apple and Nokia, which have applications stores of their own.
